The Academy Awards is the most anticipated night of the year when it comes to red carpet fashion, and last night, the stars were shinning. Well, at least some of them were. Let’s start with the good news. While The Help co-star Octavia Spencer won the Oscar, Best Supporting Actress nominee Jessica Chastain was a clear winner on the red carpet in a stunning Alexander Mcqueen printed gown. Keeping with the theme of the evening, Milla Jovovich radiated old-school Hollywood glamour with the perfect red pout to complement her white Elie Saab gown. Pharrell kept it fresh in a perfectly tailored three-piece black suit and a bow tie. Newcomer Rooney Mara ditched her signature black for a sexy and sophisticated white Givenchy Spring 2009 Couture gown, boldly worn sans jewelry. And finally, Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams looked worthy of Marilyn Monroe in a bold coral peplum Louis Vuitton gown.
But of course no awards show would be complete without a couple of fashion missteps. It’s a good thing The Artist won Best Picture because Berenice Bejo didn’t win any style points in this mint green Elie Saab creation that she paired with a matchy-matchy clutch and emerald drop earrings. While we absolutely adore her humble personality, Shailene Woodley would have looked more age appropriate in something fun and flirty rather than the uber-mature Valentino Couture dress she chose. And, we’re not sure where Jennifer Lopez was heading after the Oscars, but she looked like she was preparing to perform with the Ice Capades later on in the evening. Her overly revealing (and possibly malfunctioning) Zuhair Murad dress was one of the biggest disappointments of the night. We were also bummed to see Sandra Bullock’s unflattering black and white Marchesa gown, which was too safe for one of Hollywood’s most beautiful actresses. We loved Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids, but, much like a bad joke, her Marina Rinaldi gown fell flat compared to her previous red carpet looks this awards season. Rounding off our worst dressed list are funny guys Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis who wore over-the-top white-on-white-on-white tuxedos to announce Best Original Song. Despite their obvious disregard for tasteful fashion, we will admit that watching Will and Zach smash cymbals in Brad and Angelina’s faces was our second favorite moment of the night. (This was our first.)
